FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

September 10, 2023 — Yesterday, it was reported that New Mexico Governor, Michelle Lujan Grisham, issued an Executive Order declaring gun violence and drug abuse a public health emergency in Albuquerque and Bernalillo County, which "suspended" the lawful carry of firearms in public for thirty (30) days.

In a public hearing aired on KOB4, when asked about the constitutionality of this order, Grisham, who defended her actions, stated the following: "No constitutional right, in my view, including my oath, is intended to be absolute..."

Here in Michigan, we know the danger of Executive Orders.  We also know the danger of a Governor who is willing to weaponize the pen of her office.  This order is blatantly unconstitutional and should be condemned by Republicans, Democrats and Independents alike.  You cannot "suspend" the Constitution, nor the Constitutional rights of the citizens you were elected to serve.

As District 22's next Representative in the Michigan Legislature, I will defend the Constitution before any unlawful order, and will ensure Gretchen Whitmer upholds her oath of office should she decide to follow New Mexico's lead.
