CHRISTIAN CHARETTE ON THE CITY OF PLYMOUTH'S WAR ON THE PENN THEATRE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

August 13, 2023 — Over these past few months, and through various instances of poor decision-making, the City of Plymouth has made it clear that it is willing to go to war with local businesses in the downtown area, no matter the cost.

While the Plymouth City Commission has recently stepped back from its pursuit of considering blatantly anti-business policies aimed at local restaurant owners, this latest assault on the Penn Theatre is just another example of what is going horribly wrong with our local leadership.

By refusing to recognize the Penn’s non-profit status and by not affording it the property tax exemptions it rightfully deserves under state & federal law, the City of Plymouth is effectively robbing the theatre of the resources it takes to preserve this historic piece of our community.  It’s wrong.

I remain committed to supporting SMB’s (Small and Medium-sized Businesses) and our local business communities throughout District 22 and beyond.

For more information, or to learn how you can help the Penn Theatre fight this injustice, visit their website at www.penntheatre.com or their Facebook page at www.facebook.com/PennTheatre.
